Abstract
Objective
This study was conducted to compare the effects of del Nido cardioplegia (DNC) combined with Cell Saver and blood cardioplegia in adult patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery.
Materials and Methods
The study included 32 patients who underwent CPB surgery. They were divided into two groups: 16 patients received DNC with Cell Saver (Group 1) and 16 patients received blood cardioplegia alone (Group 2).
Results
In the study, statistically significant differences were observed between Group 1 and Group 2 in demographic and procedural characteristics, including age, gender, body mass index, body surface area, total bypass time, cross–clamp time, and length of hospital stay (p > 0.05). No significant difference was observed between groups with respect to intraoperative blood product use (p > 0.05). Potassium (K+) values were significantly higher in Group 2 during the intraoperative period (p = 0.003). HCO3 and base deficit values also differed between groups during the intraoperative period (p < 0.05). Significant increases were observed in aspartate aminotransferase and creatinine levels in both groups during the postoperative period (p < 0.05). Platelet counts tended to decrease in both groups during the postoperative period, but this decrease was statistically significant only in Group 2 (p = 0.044).
Conclusion
This study emphasizes the importance of careful monitoring of patients for metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia, and renal dysfunction. Further prospective studies with larger patient populations are needed to clearly demonstrate the potential advantages of Del Nido cardioplegia combined with Cell Saver.
