ABSTRACT

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) provides a bloodless field for cardiac surgery. The CPB system includes an extracorporeal circuit in which venous blood is emptied into a reservoir, oxygenated in the oxygenator part delivered by a pump, and returned to the body. Teamwork between the surgeon, perfusionist and anesthetist is extremely important for the successful execution of CPB. This article discusses the routine management of CPB in the light of the available literature and evidence.
