ABSTRACT

Objective:

It was planned to examine the effect of different cardioplegic solutions used in adult open heart surgery on intraoperative cerebral tissue oxygenation and to support the studies to be done on this subject.

Materials and Methods:

Our research is a descriptive retrospective and randomized study. The sample of our study, 67 adult patients who underwent cardioplegia and underwent open heart surgery at the heart center of Muğla Training and Research Hospital between January 2021 and December 2021 were included in the study. Adult patients undergoing open heart surgery, patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass, patients with no underlying hematological disease, no known bleeding pathology, and patients with no known carotid disease were included in the study.

Results:

According to the results of the study, no statistically significant difference was found for the right NIRS (p<0.581) and left NIRS (p<0.354) values of Del-Nido cardioplegia. However, a statistically significant difference was found between blood cardioplegia solution and right NIRS and left NIRS values (p<0.001). These differences may be due to the effects of the solution on cerebral blood flow, hemoglobin or hematocrit levels.

Conclusion:

In this study, the effect of different cardioplegic solutions on cerebral tissue oxygenation in the intraoperative period was investigated. For this purpose, brain oxygenation levels were measured using the right and left NIRS values. This study shows that the cardioplegia solutions used can cause differences in brain oxygenation level. These findings could help develop procedures that have a significant impact on brain function, such as cardiac surgeries.
