ABSTRACT

This review focuses on the clinical management of adult patients supported by venous-venous extracorporeal oxygenation (ECMO). When evaluating adult patients with respiratory failure for ECMO, it is important to determine the reversibility of respiratory failure, resistance to conventional therapies, indications and contraindications for initiation of support, and successful weaning criteria for successful management of the process.
